Whimsical Nutcrackers

I love the whimsical nutcrackers and thought I would try my hand at refurbishing a couple of my old ones. I didn’t think about the time it would take me so I forged ahead. It was daunting at first because of the small features and the conditions of the nutcracker. I love adding a  touch of whimsy to each one.

Painted Nutcrackers

I used acrylic paints to enhance the colors of red, gold, black and white checks. My favorite store is  Mackenzie-Childs and I longed for decorations to relate to their inventory. Little by little, I brought each Nutcracker back to life with new-found character. At times I added small adornments like stripes, waves, dots and whatever I dreamed up. I painted my signature on the bottom and dated them.

I got the idea to start offering them on Ebay and before you know it I had sold over 5o to on-line auctions. I also sold the nutcracker in several holiday craft shows that were successful. I was even featured in several local papers showing my love of nutcracker.

I submitted my portfolio to Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment locally and I opened my studio, Queen’s Closet, in 2013. There I met various artist that had a passion for art similar to mine. I felt accomplished and happy that my nutcracker took me to a whimsical world that let me inspire others. I love being around inspiring artist because they have a fresh way of looking at life and their surroundings.

I learned though, having a studio is just that. You are busy at being an artist but you don’t make money. It’s just a title with backing and responsibility.

Therefore, I contracted a special friend to build a studio on my back deck where I can work and play and be close to home. I love this studio where I can do all the things I love without the cost of monthly rent and travel expenses.
